Review: Million Dollar Baby

Very good movie. I would say this was better than Cinderella Man, simply because it was girls boxing instead of guys. Great acting, pretty sad. But afterwords I feel like the guy said she would "I think I did ok." The movie comes out triumphant for me. I really enjoyed it.

Review: What the Bleep and Battlefield Earth

So I saw What the Bleep do We Know? Excellent movie. It kind of winds around different subjects like quantum physics, the power of the mind, and how proteins work. I am actually trying to live differently based on what I saw in this movie. I just thought it was so cool. Really excellent movie.

I also read the book, Battlefield Earth. I did this largely because I don't like lying about favorite books on thefacebook and MySpace. I don't want to have all books I read in high school English. It is a damn amazing book if you enjoy science fiction and adventure. This 1050 page books tells the ultimate epic. I won't spoil anything by saying it starts out 1000 years after humans have been wiped out by an alien race. There are a few struggling humans still living in remote areas, and one man, Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, unites them to save the human race from becoming extinct. NOTHING like the movie if you saw that. Trust me. If you like Dune or other Sci Fi, you will love this.

I refuse to put a picture of Battlefield's cover, because it sucks... and is nothing like the book... at all.

Dude, Gizmodo hates Leibermann. Just FYI. And I trust Gizmodo more than anyone asking for $2-5m venture capital.

Random Music

This is a suggestion by Ianovich. I am letting iTunes run through my 5 Star music (75 songs) and writing up on the first 10 songs, randomly selected.

Something Corporate - I Woke Up in a Car :: I love this song. Very catchy and it makes me think. I love the lines like "I've never been so lost/I've never felt so much at home." Are these two conflicting feelings felt at the same time or is home a lost-sort-of feeling?

Boom Boom Satellites - Dive for You :: This is a song off of the Appleseed Soundtrack (relatively good movie with an interesting soundtrack). It is techno, so there isn't much to say. Enjoyable. Lyrics.

Linkin Park - PPr:kut :: This remix of Papercut off of the Reanimation album is one of the best remixes featured. I loved the original off of Hybrid Theory and the remix is better, featuring new lyrics.

Saosin - Seven Years :: Haha. It looks like I rigged this list. But I guess there is a 1in10 chance of hitting each song. Amazing hardcore (?) or screamo song. Saosin is amazing also but have very few songs out.

Jay-Z - Dirt Off Your Shoulder :: I am not a fanatic of Jay-Z, but this song is fun and slow enough for me to sing along (by myself...). Enjoyable and there are mixes with Weezer and Linkin Park available.

No Doubt - Sixteen :: One of the best songs off Tragic Kingdom. That whole album was actually amazing. This song is one of the heaviest as well. It's a fun one.

M83 - Unrecorded :: This song is off the Night Watch Trailer. I have never heard of the group before but it seems to be indie ambient/techno stuff. Really awesome mix of techno with strings. I imagine they are Russian.

The Used - Blue and Yellow :: Good Used song. Not too much to say. Fun to sing with. Probably meaningful.

weerd science - fuck you and your filthy a&r dept :: Good weird song by weerd science. It's rapped (?) really fast by the drummer of Coheed and Cambria. Very fun vulgar song.

Less Than Jake - Al's War :: The best song by Less Than Jake. I love this song cuz it's one of those upbeat sad songs. I think Al died or something. Not sure. Good song.

You are welcome to comment with a list of 10 random songs.

jason mraz - the remedy -- he is the king of audible words. the song has pretty good motivational lyrics.

no doubt - new -- this comes from a good movie. and it's a very catchy song.

weezer - only in dreams -- this was like the anthem of any guy in early high school that chased after a girl he couldn't have.

oasis - wonderwall -- i remember hearing this when i was a kid and loving it.

the ataris - the boys of summer -- this song makes me pretty sad because it reminds me of the summer before i went to boston for college. and stuff.

goo goo dolls - iris -- this is just an amazing song. it's a pretty damn good song to play for a girl too.

foo fighers - everlong -- "and i wonder when i sing along with you, if anything could ever feel this real forever, if anything could ever be this good again..."

counting crows - mr. jones -- this will remind me of the last school year, but the actual song has a good story behind it.

fuel - shimmer -- this song has amazing lyrics, a great break in the beginning and reminds me of a lot of times during life.

incubus - the warmth -- there's just something about this song. it'll bring you up from the worst of times.

Friday Random Ten Yay! With Bonus Coolness Self-Audit

Sublime-"Saw Red" In my opinion one of the better songs by Sublime. 7/10

The Ramones-"Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" Surprisingly upbeat for the Ramones 5/10

The Ramones-"I Just Want to Have Something to Do" Oh man, repeat artist, not cool. Automatically deduct one point. 5/10

The Ramones-"Howling at the Moon" I knew switching to iTunes was a mistake. Three Ramones in a row? Not a great song either. 3/10

NOFX-"The Cause" Great band, not their best song. But is NOFX cool? I doubt it. 4/10

Toy Dolls-"Park Lane Punchup" Very nerdy band. I don't think they're uncool enough to be cool though. Plus all their songs are about British culture. At least it's about beating up people at a disco. 4/10

Aaron Copland-"Billy the Kid Suite: Street in a Frontier Town" This probably exists off the continuum of coolness. N/A

Toy Dolls-"Idle Gossip" iTunes clearly has a long-festering hatred for me. 3/10

Bob Marley-"Get Up, Stand Up" Standard Bob Marley score. 6/10

Rancid-"Avenues and Alleyways" Rancid, one of the classic punk rock bands performing a perfectly serviceable song. 7/10

Final score: 4.3 Man, I am one uncool dude. Maybe next week.

Blatant Advertising

So I went onto H&R (Humans and Resources) today and Sunil has posted some good pics for July. Here are my personal comments:

July 1: I have no idea whats going on either.
July 2: We the mountain people?
July 3: That's true. You could write a book about how weird Japanese people are. Buncha crazies if you ask me.
July 5: Haha. "Drangon Prince" next to it looks pretty good too *shudders*.
July 6: Holy shit. Looks more like a condom. If I could be any animal, I wouldn't choose to be something that looked like a condom (Though "Portuguese Man-O-War" sounds cool).

Thats all for today. Might do a post on cheese... I'll think about it.

The Scariest Night of my Life

So Sunday, July 3, 2005 at 3:30 in the morning was the scariest thirty seconds of my life so far, and I imagine my life for years to come unless I am actually murdered. That might be scarier.

My aunt was out of town for the weekend so I was house sitting and because of fireworks and thunderstorms, I was encouraged to stay the nights so that the dogs would not be scared and alone. So on July 2nd, Nick and Colleen and I stayed the night. We all slept in the master bed together, retiring at about 1 AM. At 3:30, I woke up very very suddenly, so that I don't remember actually waking up or even getting out of bed. But I had gotten out of bed because Colleen had woken up screaming Bloody Murder. I'm dead serious. It wasn't a shrill silly scream. It wasn't a scream suppressed in any way. This is the scream one would produce if you were being stabbed to death, or raped by five men, or skinned alive. So I woke up and started running around the room trying to calm her down. The room was pitch black and she was running around, banging into the walls and such. Whenever I got a hold of her, she would push me away and keep screaming. I don't remember what I was telling her, but Nick tells me it was "It's OK. It's OK." She finally (after what Nick says was maybe 30 seconds) runs into the hallway and into my cousins' bedroom, where she crashes into the hamper and I turn on the light. She turns around and I can tell she is slowly realizing what she was doing and I can tell she is scared shitless. So Nick asks if we're ok. He had been sitting up in the bed (not able to see anything, but not knowing what to do because Colleen was screaming and I was saying "It's OK."). I say yes and we all walk into the living room and turn on the lights. I sat there staring at nothing for more than a minute because I was so scared. We talked about it and Colleen recalled seeing a figure walking around the bed which got me even more scared. She then told us that was in a dream and when she was running around, she was still dreaming, because she thought I was chasing her, trying to kill her, and thinking I was a zombie. When I turned on that light, she had woken up. We all looked around the house for any intruders just in case. And went back to bed at 5:30. I've never been more scared in my life, and neither have Colleen or Nick.

I saw Land of the Dead the next night. Ha ha. But seriously, scariest night I will ever experience.

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room

So I saw the aforementioned movie. It was pretty good as documentaries go. You may think it sounds rather dry, but they put in some good humor and strippers and some of the numbers being as big as they were kept it interesting. It gives particularly new information on the California rolling blackouts and George Bush and the capabilities of evil in mankind. Haha. Anyways. good movie.

Land of the Dead and other Scaries

So I saw Land of the Dead tonight and it was bloody amazing. Literally. Very gory but if you don't like that I think you can still deal with it because it is all very brief and rapid. The story was not amazing but certainly unique. The ideas involved made this one of the best zombie movies ever. Better than George A. Romero's (and the world's) first zombie movie but apparently a sequel because the introductory narration is taken from Night of the Living Dead.

Also, the scariest night of my life was last night. Holy mother fucking shit i was scared shitless and am still scared of my aunt's house. I'll tell the rest later. I have to compose it.

Popsicle Stick Jokes and War of the Worlds

So Friday was popsicle stick day at work and the kids all asked us to read their jokes and they were so bad. Some of the best were:

Q: What is the name of the vampire who lives in the kitchen?
A: Spatulla! (I guessed Mrs. Draculla)

Q: What time is it when you run out of ice cream?
A: Time to get more ice cream (Lame!)

According to Frida, her joke was:
Q: Why did the car never told a joke?
A: Because it never hit itself!

That one reminds me of an old classic:
Q: What's the difference between an orange?
A: The more you rub it it gets!

And this one was on bloody 1/2 the kids' damn sticks:
Q: What do whales put on their toast?
A: Jellyfish!

Haha, and one of the kids asked me what her joke said and this other kid yells to her "Nothin'!" I thought that was mean.

Oh yeah, so I also saw War of the Worlds. This movie was really really good. I think you have to know the story before you watch it. *Spoiler* So you know that aliens attack and slaughter us and we're not doing so hot. There are no heros (including Tom Cruise) and in the end, the monsters die of diseases on Earth which they have never before been introduced. */Spoiler* Knowing that, the movie doesn't end as abruptly for you if you don't know the story. It is probably the most intense movie I have ever seen. Spielberg is a wizard at creating this incredible action through sound (explosions, screams, interesting sci-fi sounds), visuals (things happening to cars, buildings, the landscape, people), and his characters (their fear, their struggle, etc.) It was quite amazing. I also enjoyed it because it is not Hollywood with exception to the action being cool. Cruise is no hero. The human race is no hero. There is little military action on screen. You never see any president or generals or anything. Just people. I recommend this for anyone.

Interestingly, this movie contains what I am sure will become one of my favorite scenes in film. (Currently this list consists of Jim's killing spree in 28 Days Later. This scene was beautifully orchestrated and revealed a lot about people, in my opinion.) I won't spoil anything for you who haven't seen it, but I will tell you it is the last scene where Tom Cruise has the car. K, bye all.
